Buy nothing day!

For me, there's no inherent reason that Sunday should be the buy nothing day. I'm less interested in religious expression than in community and family bonding. A rotating closing day would be my ideal, something like in provincial Italy. More on that another day.

Billy Bragg in 2002 or so talked about the need to not to shop on Sundays, not for religious reasons but as there really isn't a weekend anymore. The gains made by the Labor movements for much of the 20th century have been reversed/ceded without even a wimper in the last 10 -15 years. It seems like Saturdays are lost, but he and others in the British Labour movement were trying to re-claim Sundays as a day when no one had to work. For me, this also becomes an interesting discussion of class in the US as many of the jobs that require workers to work Sat. and Sun. are the service industry rather than white collar jobs. (Of course many blue collar jobs also don't work weekends often, but many do). For many I think that weekend jobs are for supplemental income to try and make ends meet. As a result, those workers are often trying to work as many hours as they can get. So, then I wonder if my attempts not to shop on Sundays is helpful or hurtful. I am not certain of either answer.
